Blended Scotch

Blended Scotch whisky combines malt and grain whiskies from multiple distilleries to create a consistent, approachable house style. It is generally lighter and smoother than single malts, with gentle cereal notes and only a whisper of smoke. Its balance makes it easy to mix without overwhelming other ingredients.

Common uses

  • base spirit for lighter Scotch cocktails
  • highballs with soda water

Buying & storage

Keeps more or less indefinitely: Alcohol is preserving it. An open bottle keeps for a very long time, though aromatics do fade slowly.

Buying: A standard blend is the right choice for mixing and costs a fraction of a single malt. Save peated malts for drinks that specifically ask for smoke — using one in a Highball is an expensive way to make a worse drink.

Storage: keeps indefinitely, store upright away from light

In depth

Understanding blended scotch

How it is made, where it comes from, what it pairs with, and how it behaves in an alcohol-free drink.

How it's made

A blend is malt whisky combined with grain whisky, the latter distilled in continuous stills from wheat or maize. Grain whisky's reputation as filler is unfair — it is what makes a blend approachable and mixable, and blending is a genuine craft rather than a dilution exercise. Age statements refer to the youngest whisky in the blend.

Origin

Produced in Scotland by blending malt and grain whiskies under Scotch Whisky Regulations.

What it pairs with

Lemon, honey, ginger and soda. Blends take mixing far better than single malts do, which is the entire reason they exist — using a heavily peated malt in a Highball is an expensive way to make a worse drink.

In alcohol-free drinks

  • Nothing reproduces it. Smoked tea comes closest to a peated character; for a standard blend, strong black tea with a little honey syrup gets the tannin and sweetness but none of the barrel.
