Heatproof mug
Any vessel that takes near-boiling liquid without cracking — a handled glass mug, a stemmed toddy glass, or the mug already in your cupboard. The handle is not decorative; a hot drink at serving temperature is genuinely too hot to hold.
What it's for: Serving hot toddies, Irish coffee, mulled drinks and hot punches.
Don't have one?
A normal ceramic mug. It is the safest option in the cupboard and the only visible loss is seeing the layers in an Irish coffee.
Pre-warm it with hot water and pour that away before building the drink. A cold vessel drops a hot drink several degrees on contact, which shortens the window it tastes right in more than any other variable here.
⚠ Never pour boiling liquid into an untempered glass. If you are unsure what a glass is made of, use a ceramic mug instead.
Buying guidance
Look for borosilicate or explicitly tempered glass. Ordinary tumblers can crack under thermal shock, and the failure happens while you are holding it.
