Cobbler shaker
A three-piece shaker made of a tin, a built-in strainer cap and a small cap, designed for home use since it doesn't require a separate straining step.
What it's for: Shaking and straining cocktails in one vessel.
Don't have one?
Any secure jar or bottle with a tight-fitting lid works the same way — see the cocktail-shaker entry for general guidance on improvising a shaker.
The built-in strainer cap is convenient but can clog with pulp or muddled fruit; a jar plus a separate strainer works just as well.
Buying guidance
Check that the small cap doesn't stick under pressure — a cap that's hard to remove after shaking is a common frustration.
Recipes that call for a shaker
Recipes specify a cocktail shaker rather than a particular type — a cobbler shaker is one of the two common designs, and any of these will work with it.
