Boston shaker
A two-piece shaker made of a metal tin and either a second metal tin or a mixing glass, favoured by professional bartenders for speed and capacity.
What it's for: Shaking cocktails quickly at volume.
Don't have one?
Two nesting containers — such as a jar and a sturdy cup — that seal together firmly work the same way; see the cocktail-shaker entry for general shaking guidance.
Faster to seal and break down than a cobbler shaker, and its larger capacity chills more efficiently — this is why bartenders prefer it over a cobbler shaker for speed and volume, but a cobbler shaker or improvised jar produces an equally good drink at home.
Buying guidance
Look for tins with slightly different rim sizes so they seal tightly under pressure but separate easily afterwards.
Recipes that call for a shaker
Recipes specify a cocktail shaker rather than a particular type — a boston shaker is one of the two common designs, and any of these will work with it.
