Coupe vs Martini Glass
The two stemmed glasses for drinks served up: shape, spill and size.
Which should you use?
If you buy one stemmed glass, buy coupes: the curved bowl holds a drink without slopping it and suits both shaken and stirred drinks. The V-shaped Martini glass looks the part but spills easily, and many modern ones are so large that a properly sized drink looks lost in them.
| Dimension | Coupe | Martini glass |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Shallow, rounded bowl | Conical V |
| Spills | Less | More — the rim is wide and the walls are shallow |
| Sizes met | Vintage ones small; modern ones larger | Ranges widely; many are oversized |
| Best for | Shaken drinks, sours, Daiquiris; stirred drinks too | Martinis and other stirred drinks |
Using one in place of the other
Any drink served up can go in either. Match the glass size to the drink so it is not two-thirds empty.
